Merapi volcano is located 40 kilometer north of Yogyakarta and included one of the most active volcano in the world. It erupts on average every 5-10 years and is feared for its deadly pyroclastic flows - avalanches of hot rocks and gas that are generated when parts of new lava domes constructed during eruptions in the summit crater collapse and slide down the mountain's steepflanks. The local people call this pyroclastic flows in Javanese Wedus Gembel (Wedus – a sheep; gembel – thick curly hair), as it looked like.

Sekaten taken from the pronunciation of the word phrase “Creed”. Creed term, which is then pronounced as Syahadatain is then gradually change in the pronunciation, including fusion with Javanese culture and literature to become Syakatain and eventually became the term “Sekaten” until now.

At the early stages of development of Islam in Java, one of the Wali Songo, the Sunan Kalijogo as Javanese gamelan musical instrument that used at Sekaten, as a means to lure the public to come to enjoy the performances of gamelan musical instrument. Ingredient -

  • 100 gr cube sliced chicken breast, marinate with 1 tsp corn starch and 2 tsp of soy sauce
  • 2 pieces of fish balls, sliced
  • 3 pieces of meat balls, sliced
  • 2 garlic, minced
  • 1 spring onion, cut into 4 cm in length
  • 1/2 big onion, sliced
  • 1/2 carrot, sliced thin
  • 1/2 bunch of cauliflowers or a small size broccoli– cut into small florets
  • 1 cup of cabbage, diced
  • 1 cup of napa cabbage / chinese cabbage, diced
  • 1 cup of bok choy / green mustard, cut into 4 cm in length
  • 5 straw mushroom, cut into 4-6 slice each
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp of oyster sauce
  • 2 tbsp of cooking wine / ang ciu
  • 2 cups of water / chicken stock
  • 1 tbsp of vegetable oil
  • salt and pepper
  • 1 tsp of corn starch mix it with ± 6 tsp of water
